When I first started collecting sea glass I had no clue that I’d be running across sea pottery. I have to say that I was very surprised and very happy about it. I’ve come to like creating sea pottery jewelry almost as much as sea glass jewelry.
Most sea glass found in my area is white, brown or green. Nothing exciting. The nice thing about pottery is that it comes in so many different shapes and colors and patterns. Some pieces are blue and white, red and white, pink, green, or yellow. You would never find these colors in sea glass.
The pottery is beautifully smoothed and on most pieces the finish has a beautiful crackling to it that adds to the character and gives away it’s true age. Some pieces can be over 100 years old.
These pieces also make lovely one of a kind pieces of jewelry. This is when it’s fun to add different color rattail cording as a necklace in colors that enhance the colors of the pottery piece. As a jewelry maker you can enjoy letting your creativity run wild using beads and embellishments as you want. You may want to create a custom piece with a particularly nice piece of pottery.
