Newmarket Races
If you are visiting the Cambridgeshire area during the months of May to November you have to check out the schedule at Newmarket races and try and take in a meeting. Although technically in the county of Suffolk, Newmarket is surrounded on 3 sides by Cambridgeshire and is easily accessible via the A14. It’s approximately 20 minutes from Cambridge and there are good train and bus connections between the two.
There are two race courses in Newmarket, the recently renovated Natwest Rowley mile course and the July course.
The Natwest Rowley Mile is easily identified by the magnificent Millennium Grandstand which dominates the skyline as you approach the course. The NatWest Rowley Mile hosts racing of the highest calibre during the Spring and Autumn, including two of Britain's five classic races in early May: the Stan James 1000 and 2000 Guineas. The highlights of the autumn, the Cambridgeshire Meeting and the superlative Champions' Day.
The July course is situated alongside the National Stud on the approach to the town and is home to all of Newmarket's summer race meetings. From mid-June to the end of August it provides the perfect countryside setting for a fantastic day's racing. Open air bars, the sun dappling through the trees and the thatched roofed buildings make up the character of this distinctive and much loved course.
The July course is also home to the ever popular Newmarket Nights evening events. Newmarket Nights combines an adrenaline fuelled Friday night’s race meeting, followed by an open air concert from a well known act. Previous acts have included Girls Allowed, Westlife and Texas. This years confirmed act’s are Jools Holland, who is a regular sell out at Newmarket, and INXS.
Newmarket races isn’t just for the hardcore gambler either. Just being around the atmosphere and standing by the track as the horses thunder past just feet away is enough to make a great day out. Both courses also have plenty of facilities to keep children entertained so there is no reason not to make it a day out for all the family.
Prices for both courses vary depending on which enclosure you want to watch the racing from. There are usually 3 enclosures that you can choose, depending on the racing experience you are looking for.
If it’s just a family day out you are looking for you can take a picnic and camp out in one of the garden areas along the track for around £7-£8 (€10-€12).
If you want to fully immerse yourself in the glitz, glamour (and Pimms!) of the racing scene you need to be in the member’s area. Passes for the member’s area usually cost around £25-£30 (€40 - €50) depending on the course and this gives you open access to all parts of the course, including exclusive bars not accessible to other entrants. Everyone should try the member’s area at least once just to experience this side of racing; and to mix with the high rollers and glitterati that define the social side of this fascinating sport.
