Cambridge things to do
One of the first things you will want to know when you get to this varied and exciting city is exactly what are the best Cambridge things to do? It of course depends who you speak to, what you want from your holiday and how long you are staying, but as a general rule some things that all visitors should make an effort not to miss are:
Cambridge University. – The University is actually made up of several colleges, the most famous of which is Kings College. So rather than plan to visit ‘The University’ it pays to do some research and decide which of the colleges most interests you and plan your trip around that. Most of them are within fairly close proximity but a few are a bit further out of town so it is worth putting some planning in to avoid wandering aimlessly around the town.
Alternatively there are many tours that you can book and they will take you around the most interesting colleges accompanied by a guide. This is probably the best option if you are on a limited stay and/or do not want the hassle of organising the route yourself.
Punting and The Backs - The River Cam meanders seductively through this great city and there is no better way to enjoy it than by taking a guided punt, at your leisure, in the summer sun. If you wish you can choose to punt yourself and stop off on one of the riverbanks for a picnic, or champagne and strawberries!
One of the most beautiful and serene places to go punting is along, the Cambridge Backs, so called because six of the Universities colleges back onto the river here. The area, from Silver Street bridge in the south to Magdalene Street bridge in the north is notable for the colleges expansive lawns and gardens and provides the perfect escape from the hussle and bustle of the city. Taking this route will also take you under the world famous Bridge of Sighs, a treat in itself.
The Fitzwilliam Museum The Fitzwilliam museum provides a perfect day out for all the family, especially if the weather takes a turn for the worst. The museum has one of the largest collections of fine art in the country, along with displays of medieval armour and ancient pottery. It is within easy reach of the city centre and has children’s activities all year round.
Cambridge Market Square Cambridge market square has been around for centuries and is still a great place to grab a bargain. The friendly and jovial stall holders sell everything from CD’s to specialist cakes and breads. The market is in the real heart of Cambridge and from here you can continue shopping in the more upmarket side streets, dine in Bridge Street or visit Kings College chapel, all within walking distance. The market is open all week but is at it’s most vibrant on a Saturday.
There are many other Cambridge things to do such as visiting the Botanical gardens and walking the grounds at Anglesey Abbey but the above should hopefully give you an indicator of the things that most tourists try not to miss out on.
