Days out in Cambridgeshire

There are so many fantastic days out in Cambridgeshire you really need to have an idea of what you want to do before you start looking.

Most people associate days out in with Cambridgeshire with visiting the Cambridge Colleges but that is only the tip of the iceberg in terms of things to do. Every town and city in the area has it’s own unique place in history.

Huntingdon, once home to Oliver Cromwell has a fantastic museum dedicated to the rich history of the man who some claim a dictator, and others a hero. Now you can visit the museum and decide for yourself!
In addition to the Cromwell history Huntingdon is also home to numerous other interesting museums and some fabulous nature reserves.

The relatively small city of Ely is dominated by it’s breathtaking cathedral, considered to be one of the finest still in existence. Highlights include the famous Octagon Tower built in 1322, the superb Norman carvings dating from 1135 and the uninterrupted view from the West Tower to the Presbytery.

The cathedral is open most of the year and if you are lucky you might even catch a performance from the cathederal boys choir, a truly fantastic experience.

Peterborough also has it’s own cathedral, as well as a number of museums and local heritage sites. One of the star attractions in this area, particularly for the younger travellers is the Nene Valley Railway. As well as being one a few remaining steam engine railways in the country it is also home to H W Audreys, Thomas the Tank Engine. If it’s a family day out you are looking for you can’t get much better than a ride on Thomas through the spooky tunnel and back to the station.

No visit to Cambridgeshire would be complete without popping over the border a couple of miles and paying a visit to the famous horse racing town of Newmarket. As well as a visit to the race courses themselves there are lots of great tours that take in the local stud farms and let you get up close and personal with champion race horses from the past, present and future.
